Stevens Hess Band
Vicki Stevens from Seattle and Sonny Hess from Portland have joined forces. You may remember Sonny Hess with Paulette N’ Power Band, fronted by the late, great Paulette Davis from 1991 to 1996. The Power Band took Portland by storm in the early 90’s winning the Best R&B Act Award by the People’s Choice Crystal Awards. They had a tight sound with a recording contract in the works when Paulette met her untimely death. Since then, Sonny has continued looking for that “special connection” while performing in clubs and festivals with the Sonny Hess Band. When Vicki Stevens sat in with the legendary band, something happened that couldn’t be denied, ‘it was like, MAGIC’ and that magic was felt by everyone. Once you have heard these two powerful women perform together you will feel the magnetism. This group has its own style of funk, soul, and rhythm & blues.
King Louie and LaRhonda Steele
The Oregonian calls Louis “King Louie” Pain, “Portland’s boss of the B-3.” And KOIN t.v. recently dubbed vocalist LaRhonda Steele, “Portland’s First Lady of the Blues.” The pair’s first CD together, “Rock Me Baby,” has generated a lot of buzz, including a four-star rating in prestigious Downbeat magazine. As David Greenwald wrote in The Oregonian, “the soulful collection, Steele’s first since surviving breast cancer, is a proud, powerful celebration of life.” Joining the two at Northwest Art and Air Festival will be drummer Edwin Coleman III (Soul Vaccination) and saxophonist Renato Caranto (Merle Haggard).
